Nestled in the Bay of Mont St Michel, just 14 miles off the French coast of Normandy, the small island of Jersey has a decidedly international air.

You get that holiday feeling as soon as you arrive and spot many of the place names still written in French, with local restaurants serving up steaming seafood platters in pretty harbourside settings.

Although Jersey has been associated with the British Crown for some 900 years, and you can happily go shopping with Sterling in your pocket, it's not truly British – and the island's mild climate and cosmopolitan towns set it even further apart from mainland Britain.

With wonderful coastal scenery, sandy beaches and a reputation for fine dining and Michelin-starred restaurants, Jersey is full of pleasant surprises.

Once you've spent lazy days strolling on the beach and shopping and dining in the lively capital, St Helier, there are plenty of sights to keep you busy.

Explore Mont Orgueil Castle

In a spectacular coastal setting, this 'living history' attraction housed within a 600-year-old castle transports visitors to another time, with a team or re-enactors revealing what life was like when the castle was under attack.

Make a wish at the Tudor well, climb the turrets and imagine firing the cannon from the top of the castle, and enjoy the spectacular views of the French coast.

Watch the sun set behind La Corbière Lighthouse

Jersey's most dramatic and photographed landmark, and a great spot to watch the sun set into the Atlantic, La Corbière lighthouse is perched on the rocks at Jersey's most extreme south-western point, the scene of many shipwrecks.

It was the first lighthouse in the British Isles to be built of concrete, and you can walk right up to it at low tide, with an alarm to warn you to clear the causeway as the tide rises.

Descend into the Jersey War Tunnels

Jersey War Tunnels, or Hohlgangsanlage 8 (often abbreviated to Ho8) was an incomplete underground hospital complex built in St. Lawrence by German occupying forces during World War II. The complex is made up of more than 1 km of completed tunnels which were converted into a museum after the liberation of the Channel Islands. Today visitors can descend into the tunnels to discover the fascinating story of Jersey's occupation.
